Finding Jobs Near You (That Actually Exist)

Last updated June 2024

Okay so you searched "jobs near me" and got hit with a wall of listings that all look the same. Half of them are probably outdated. Some are definitely scams. And the ones that are real? You're competing with 300 other people.

I've been on both sides of this — applying for jobs and hiring people. Let me tell you what actually works for finding jobs near you in Kenya, specifically in Nairobi but most of this applies elsewhere too.

The Reality of "Near Me" for Jobs

Here's the thing nobody tells you: most employers don't post online first. They ask around. They check their circles. They ask current employees if they know anyone.

Real example:

Friend of mine needed a delivery driver. Didn't post on any job board. Just asked in 3 WhatsApp groups and had 8 qualified candidates by end of day. Hired someone within 48 hours. Job never hit the public internet.

Where the Jobs Actually Are

1. Community Circles (Not What You Think)

Not talking about Facebook groups full of spam. I mean actual communities where people know each other — church groups, estate associations, chama groups, alumni networks. That's where jobs get shared first.

2. Walk-Ins Still Work

Sounds old school but for retail, restaurants, and small shops, walking in with your CV still beats applying online. The manager is right there. You make an impression. They remember you.

3. WhatsApp Status (Seriously)

So many small businesses just post on their WhatsApp status when they need someone. Ask friends to keep an eye out. Put it on your own status that you're looking. It sounds informal but it works.

Online Jobs: The Good and The Bad

Everyone wants "online jobs" now. Work from home, make money in dollars, all that. Let me be straight with you about what's real and what's a trap.

Actually Legit

  • • Writing/translation (if you have skills)
  • • Virtual assistant work
  • • Graphic design freelance
  • • Coding/development
  • • Data entry (low pay but real)

Probably Scams

  • • "Pay 500 to get started"
  • • Watch ads for money
  • • Guaranteed 50k weekly
  • • Pyramid schemes disguised as "networking"
  • • Forex trading "opportunities"

Job Listings That Don't Suck

Most job listing sites are a mess. Outdated posts. Fake listings. Jobs that were filled months ago still showing up because nobody took them down.

What if job listings came from actual employers in your community? People who your neighbors already know and trust? That's basically what we're building here.

Find Jobs Through Your Community

See job postings from businesses in your circles. Real employers, verified by people you trust. No more wading through spam listings.

Quick Reality Check

"Jobs near me" isn't magic. It's just proximity. Doesn't mean good pay, doesn't mean fair treatment, doesn't mean growth. Sometimes the right job is worth the commute.

Your network matters more than your CV. Unfair but true. Someone who can vouch for you beats a perfect resume every time.

Apply even if you're not 100% qualified. Job requirements are wish lists. If you can do 60% of what's listed, apply anyway.

Finding jobs near you shouldn't feel like throwing CVs into a black hole. Your community already knows who's hiring — you just need to tap into that network.
